| Eyes
of the Mummy
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, famous for helming
such classic films as Trouble in Paradise, The
Shop Around the Corner & Heaven Can Wait,
this 1918 silent film is a tale of revenge set
in Egypt. A young English artist (played by Harry
Liedtke) goes on a student trip to Egypt, where
he encounters a strange and mysterious woman while
traveling through the deserts of Cairo. Upon returning
to his hotel, he overhears a conversation about
the burial chamber of Queen Ma and how anyone
who visits the tomb will encounter disaster. The
next day he begins searching for a guide willing
to take him to the tomb.
The film was a major change for Lubitsch, who
had become known for his comedies. With “The
Eyes of the Mummy”, he took his artistic
approach in an entirely new direction.
