Many American documentaries have focused on the loss
of the American dream, or even the loss of basic American
necessities, like jobs, infrastructure and economic
stability. Films like “Roger & Me”,
“Motel” & “Enron: The Smartest
Guys in the Room” all take their stabs at the
downfall of the American dream and it’s inevitable
effect on a region's populace. But nothing has ever
really captured the absolute weirdness, pain and anxiety
of struggling in society like the 1979 documentary “Space
Coast”, which details what happened to many of
the residents of Cape Canaveral, Florida who were once
part of the NASA machine, who later found their careers
and lives abandoned by the beach, left scratching for
work and crumbs.
The film follows three residents, all with a very different,
but equally tragic story to tell, ranging from an out
of work maintenance man turned motorcycle gang leader
to a local TV clown kids show host.
This is must see stuff for those who like their reality
weird, raw and unfiltered!
