A
haunting, hallucinatory and touching film. It tells
the story of a small boy who finds the daily noise
of his town painful: the chickens, the church bells,
the blacksmith’s banging. He steals a row
boat and sets off to a near by island where he plays
music on his homemade violin. He attracts the attention
of a hermit living on the island. The man introduces
the boy to an instrument called the Yanco. When
the boy returns to town, playing the Yanco, the
sounds scare the townspeople who think the music
is coming from an evil spirit in the woods. Eventually
the townspeople kill the boy when they discover
he is the source of this strange music.
Yanco is a towering triumph of imagery and music,
relying on little to no dialog to tell its tragic
tale. The film possesses many of the traits that
made Ingmar Bergman such a success and it actually
manages to trump his execution in many respects.
Yanco is another brilliant example of the horrifically
overlooked cinema of Mexico. A highly recommended
work of genius.
