A
DEGREE OF MURDER
Germany 1967
Despite its film noir trappings, director Volker
Schlondorff’s dispassionate thriller transcends
its sub-genre to become a more broad-based study
of alienation and angst in West Germany during
the 1960s. Clearly a product of its time, the
film stars erstwhile sex symbol Anita Pallenberg
(Performance) as Marie, who shoots her
ex-lover (Werner Enke) when he comes to her apartment
and attempts to rape her. Afterward, she pays
two strangers to dispose of the body, becoming
their lover in the process. Although there is
a good deal of passion on display, both criminal
and carnal, Schlondoff presents his characters
as lacking even the most rudimentary emotional
involvement. This is by design and represents
the so-called “German cinema of alienation”
at its most bemusing. Brian Jones (Rolling Stones),
who was dating Pallenberg at the time, makes a
brief appearance in the film as well as writing
and performing the bouncy, psychedelic score just
months before his untimely death. It is the only
recording he ever made as an ex- Rolling Stone.

ANNA
France 1966
Released in 1966, this was the first color film
made for French TV. Starring Anna Karina (of Godard
film fame), Marianne Faithfull (who sings one
song) & Serge Gainsbourg (who also wrote the
amazing music). Anna is a bizarre pop art/comedy/musical
filled with bright vibrant colors, strange, hallucinatory
scenes and some of the best songs Serge ever wrote.
The story is about a man obsessively looking for
a woman he saw in a photograph. A truly charming
and entertaining movie that any Gainsbourg fan
should see, even if you don’t speak French.

ARREBATO
Spain 1979
This incredible art film by Spanish director Ivan
Zulueta tells the delusional story of an independent
filmmaker and his bizarre dissent into drugs,
vampirism and his own cinematic visions. While
watching, one can't help but see the connections
to David Cronenberg's Videodrome which
this film predates by 5 years! This daring film
combines the best elements of Bunuel, Arrabal,
Cronenberg and Lynch without ever seeming derivative,
phony or self-conscious. Arrebato
is without a doubt a lost classic that needs to
be revived. Simply put, this is one of the most
haunting, strange and original films you will

ASESINO
DE OTROS MUNDOS
Mexico 1971
Santo, the masked Mexican wrestling superstar
returns! This is one of the more unusual Santo
movies out there, mainly because it strays from
much of the normal Santo cinema formula. Gone
are the long stretches of stock footage wrestling
as well as numerous scenes of a turtle necked
Santo drinking tea and driving his European sports
car. No my friends, this one features more of
the superhero Santo, complete with cape, taking
on a Hitler like millionaire out to destroy the
human race whose headquarters contains a moon
room and guards with giant flame throwers! Not
to mention the impending horror of the evil man
eating blob. And did we mention the Ornette Coleman
like free jazz soundtrack? It truly does not get
much better than this one!

BATMAN
EN ROBIN
Filipino 1993
This mind melting genre hodgepodge is a Filipino
musical action comedy romance parody of the American
TV show “Batman”. Filled with bizarre
song and dance numbers centered around classic
American oldies, like The Everly Brother’s
“Bird Dog” or Danny & the Juniors
“At the Hop!” the movie conveys a
sense of humor that seems to be totally confined
to it’s own corner of the world. For the
rest of us, the effect is stupefyingly wonderful,
in a painfully sublime kind of way. In other words,
any and all fans of weirdo international cinema

BATTLE

Germany/Italy 1973
An
Italian/German co-production starring Henry Silva
as mafia hot shot Luca Messina who comes to Hamburg
with the main intention of taking it over. However,
the local German crime lord isn’t particularly
down with Mr Messina’s plan and a bloody
gang war ensues.
Directed by vertern crime/exploitation/TV filmmaker
Jürgen Roland, the movie is considered by
many to be the best German crime film to come
from the 1970's. Filled with violence, depravity
& the usual blitzkrieg one associates with
70's Euro crime films, "Battle of the Godfathers"
is about as good as it gets!
Highly recommended!

Based on the Spike Milligan play of the same name,
The Bed-Sitting Room (directed by Richard
Lester, the man who brought us HELP!, Superman

stars Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Spike Milligan

BIG
COMMOTION
Japan 1968
This episodic Help! inspired Japanese
mod rock film is essentially a vehicle for the
band The Spiders whose sound comes
off as a weird hybrid of The Beatles,
The Ventures and The Electric Prunes.
The film starts with The Spiders tearing
away from an overrun bus depot filled with screaming
teenage fans as they make a break for it in
their 64 Ford Galaxy 500 station wagon only
to have a mod girl in a sports car crash into
them. After undergoing some bizarre treatments
in the hospital, it’s off to practice
for their big Tokyo show that night. And from
there, the films delves into weird episodic
fantasy romps involving a battlefield, a soccer
game, a wedding, a Sgt. Pepper’s inspired
moment, a Charlie Chaplin segment and more.
Mixing live concert footage; staged backstage
practice sessions; and absurdly comic moments
reminiscent of The Monkees, Big
Commotion is like no rock film you have
ever seen.

CAN
DIALECTICS BREAK BRICKS?
France 1973
"Directed" by the French situationist
Rene Vienet, this film is an exercise in intellectual
absurdity: A Hong Kong martial arts movie overdubbed
with French political diatribes and philosophies
which is designed to entertain and amuse while
providing a number of artistic and political points.
The "story" details the epic battle
between the proletariats and the bureaucrats with
a martial arts school as the utopian commune.
Filled with amazingly absurd humor and political
satire that will make you feel all intellectual
inside, it’s an amazing combination of near
slapstick comedy with Godardian experimentation.
In many ways Vienet is trying to make some very
important statements- such as the way cinema feeds
ideology- as well as an intense anger over the
sad failure of socialism. It is considered the
only remaining film vision of the situationist's
technique called "détournement."
Just think of it as a kind of Mystery Science
Theatre for fans of Guy Debord and Wilhelm Reich.

Hong Kong 1980
This amazingly weird film is about a witch who
casts an ancient curse on people, apparently just
for fun. The plotline nears the unintelligible,
but the content of the film is so jaw dropping,
so shocking, and at times so hilarious, it is
hard to avoid its bizarre charms. Working as a
jarring welcome into the world of the ultra gross
low budget Honk Kong horror films, The Devil
is filled with what would become familiar staples
of the genre; such as, seemingly endless scenes
of people convulsing and vomiting worms, snakes,
slime and maggots. And when someone is not dying
via snake vomiting there are scenes involving
goofy kids (one named Ding Dong!) having a good
time, none of which seems to match up with the
grotesque scenes that revolve around the witch's
ancient curse. What is it all about? We're not
sure, but we do know that if people melting and
throwing up worm like creatures is your idea of
a good time, then The Devil is for you!

GODSPEED,
YOU BLACK EMPEROR
Asian 1976
This
obscure documentary is director Mitsuo Yanagimachi's
first film. Documenting the exploits of the Japanese
biker gang, The Black Emperors, from their "club"
meetings to some near rumbles with other bike
gangs, the film crew is allowed into just about
every aspect of the gang’s existence. Watching
this film certainly shows the vast difference
between Japanese bikers and American bikers which
happens to be a monumental difference with the
Japanese gangs seeming more like a social club
than a lifestyle. Turned into a much sought after
cult film thanks to the band of the same name,
this subtle documentary is certainly deserving
of its new found fame.

GROUPIE
GIRL
United Kingdom 1971
Directed by the amazingly neglected Derek Ford,
this British coming of age film has been strangely
repackaged as a sexploitation film. Sure there
is some nudity and sex, and its director made
such classic sex films as Sexplorer and
The Sex Express, but it's far from the
skin soaked celluloid of much of the early 70's
grindhouse films. It's actually a pretty right
on youth film about a girl who dreams of meeting
rock stars. She becomes a groupie and goes from
band to band to band and eventually ends up addicted
to drugs and surrounded by tragedy. In many ways
it’s a damnation of the British rock scene
of the 70’s, presenting the rock stars as
drug using assholes (what a shock!). The soundtrack
is about as good as they get (if you're into late
60's garage rock) and the film is actually quite
good, despite its now bizarre exploitation associations.
It packages much of the mood and feel of the late
60's and holds up nicely as a document of that
time. A highly recommended lost film.

HANNIBAL
BROOKS
United Kingdom, 1979
Most
road movies follow a similar formula but this
1969 film, starring Oliver Reed, certainly paves
its own path. Mixing comedy with real drama
and social commentary, Hannibal Brooks is
a rare breed of adventure movie. A WWII prisoner
of war (Oliver Reed) working at a zoo gets the
chance to escape from the Germans, so he does
and takes with him the elephant that he’s
been caring for. Together they head for the
Swiss border and freedom. Also starring Michael
J Pollard, James Donald, Helmut Lohner and directed
by Michael Winner, who also directed Reed in

film filled with charm, wit and excitement.

HEAD
AGAINST THE WALL
United Kingdom 1958
Director Franju is best known for his films Eyes
Without a Face, Judex and the harrowing
documentary Blood of the Beasts. Franju's
prior training in documentary film helps bring
a veneer of reality to this harrowing glimpse
within the walls of an insane asylum.
Pierre Brasseur plays Marbeau, a traditionalist
"head doctor" who takes on the case
of young Francois (Jean-Paul Mocky). Though not
really insane, Francois has been institutionalized
for daring to defy his wealthy father. The story
is told from Francois' point of view as he teeters
on the edge of madness during his involuntary
internment. The film is essentially a plea for
a more sensible treatment of the mentally disturbed
and the emotionally distressed, calling for much
needed widespread reforms.

HIDDEN ROOM aka THE OBSESSION
United Kingdom 1949
Dmytryk’s Hidden Room is based
on Alec Coppel’s suspense play, A Man
About a Dog. Robert Newton stars as Dr. Clive
Riordan, the insanely jealous husband of Storm
Riordan (Sally Gray). Not content with merely
murdering Storm’s American lover, Bill Kronin
(Phil Brown), Riordan chains up the poor fellow
in a deserted building. His reasoning, should
the police accuse Riordan of Kronin’s murder,
the doctor can always produce the live victim
who is blindfolded with no idea who his captor
is. Once the investigation into the man’s
disappearance has subsided, Riordan intends to
kill Bill and dispose of the body in an acid bath.
There's only one problem with his plan, the doctor

HOUSE
Asian 1977
Seven sisters visit their grandmother
in a strange house which turns out to be a demon
that eats young virgins. One girl is eaten by
a piano, another is consumed by her bedding, and
the rest are even more weird and strange. The
real insanity of the film comes in the form of
its visual sense. Director Nobuhiko Obayashi fills
his film with so many off the wall visual moments,
it's like watching a film made by 30 different
directors. There is animation interspersed with
live action, weird back projection visuals, strange
lighting, visual proportion manipulation and a
lot more. Plus the film is so categorically disjointed
it can only be described as a satire/slapstick/horror/gore/coming

THE
IMAGINARY VOYAGE
France
Directed by
legendary filmmaker Rene Clair, “Le Voyage
Imaginaire” is full of suggestions in which
different genres are mixed (avant-garde, comedy,
surrealism) without any real connection. It’s
a really bizarre film that relates the complicated
relationship between three bank clerks (and their
boss) for the typist girl that works with them.
Clair creates a dream world which plunges the
audience into a universe full of fantasy. There
are lady fortunetellers, fairies, classic story
characters and even modern heroes such as “Charlot”,
not to mention the “Notre Dame” roofs
and the museum “Grévin”. Overall
it seems to be a kind of deluded fairy tale, extravagant,
anxiously exaggerated and very rich in film ideas.
That mixed dream world benefits from using all
the special effects known at that time (slow motion,
double exposure, optical effects) combined with
simple backgrounds that are perfect for the formal
aspect of the story. It all creates an unreal
atmosphere, incredible and dumbfounding at times.

JE
T'AMIE, MOI NON PLUS
France 1976
Written and directed by Serge Gainsbourg and starring
his frequently naked wife Jane Birkin & Andy
Warhol super stud Joe Dallesandro, Je T'Amie,
Moi Non Plus is a strikingly erotic and assaulting
film. The story concerns a truck stop waitress
named Johnny (Birkin) and her bizarre and violent
relationship with Krassky (Dellesandro), a gay
truck driver who finds himself strangely attracted
to the waif like woman. Not surprisingly, Krassky's
truck driving lover, Padovan, takes a strong dislike
to Johnny and plans to kill her. Filled with amazingly
graphic, erotic, and violent sex scenes, Gainsbourg's
film is like nothing ever seen before, an art
film roughie with homosexual overtones and an
amazing film score.

THE
KILLER RESERVED NINE SEATS
Italy 1974
Veteran Italian filmmaker
Giuseppe Bennati tries his hand at the early '70s
glut of Giallo thrillers with this bloody and
erotic variation on the Ten Little Indians
plot line. Considered by many to be one of the
best examples of the Italian Giallo film, this
movie mixes amazingly creepy suspense and overtly
sexual moments with the kind of gut wrenching
gore we've all come to expect from those wacky
Italians. The plot is about nine people connected
in one way or another (i.e. by blood, intrigue
or rivalry) who are invited to an abandoned theatre.
Once there, they find themselves trapped and learn
that an entire family was slaughtered in the theatre
years ago. Eventually one by one they are systematically
killed in various horrific ways by a mysterious
assassin hiding in the shadows who may or may
not be of supernatural origin. Filled with disturbing
and spooky imagery and moments, The Killer

the Giallo genre. .

THE
KILLING OF SATAN
Phillipines 1983
A brilliant example of the kind of insane genre
techniques 80’s Filipino directors filled
their films with. In this 90-minute supernatural
horror film you get more insane moments of absolute
jaw dropping madness than 40 American horror films
combined! You get a zombie with googly eyes jumping
out of the water; a strange lizard midget monster
with a very out of place vaginal slit; a woman
who turns into a toad; spinning heads; people
morphing into snakes; cartoon like levels of violence;
and an amazing all out battle to the death between
the hero and Satan himself! And that is just a
small sample of what this movie has to offer.
The story is about a man chosen by his dead uncle
to battle the forces of evil. First, he must fight
a being called “The Prince of Magic”
who shoots rays from his hands, can make heads
spin around and hypnotize people. For the grand
finale, he finally faces Satan himself and engages
him in a battle of magic that simply must be seen
to be believed!

THE
SECRET FORMULA AKA LA FORMULA SECRETA
Mexico 1965
Strange, semi-surrealist
nightmares (somehow related to Mexican realities)
form the matrix of this work. A corpse is carried
on a flour truck, a boy knifes a cow, a couple
kiss before a blood- bespattered wall, and clerical
students imitate the crucifixion. Perhaps the
best scene is of a Mexican staring out silently
toward the Mexican plateau. After awhile, the
camera pans away from him to concentrate on the
landscape. Stubbornly, he re-enters the frame
and assumes his former position, but the camera
pulls away again, and again he returns ... a perfect
visual metaphor. Director Rubén Gámez
occupies a place of honor in motion picture history.
The fabulous medium-length La Fórmula
Secreta (The Secret Formula) is an irreverent
treatment of national symbols and a playful approach
to formal experimentations. An irrational essay,
unified only by the author's unique voice, full
of surreal moments and provocative scenarios related
to intellectual debates about the Mexican national
character. Gamez relates the film to the supposed
passivity of the Mexican people, for whom the
film serves as a wake-up call.

What
begins as a seemingly little British film about

the story of a young girl who gets away from her
town to go to London, to her auntie’s home.
London, the big city and its high lights. But
also its dangers. All kind of dangers. Especially
men. All kind of men. The female lead falls in
love with a youngster like her, a handsome night
club singer who happens to be a petty hood, nothing
more. And our young girl is also harassed by an
elder man, who is himself in love with her. A
wealthy man. And, of course, the young lover of
the girl is searching for the big money. Easy
money...

The story is based on American author Jim Thompson's

and is close in spirit to the U.S. film noir mysteries
of the 1940s. Frank Poupart (Patrick Dewaere)
is a 30-year-old loser, a salesman who is barely

to think things over." He meets Mona (Marie Trintignant),
a quiet, dreamy 15-year-old girl whose aunt offers
her to him for sexual pleasure in return for a
sweater. They become lovers and both of them see
a way out of their impoverished dead-end existence
when Mona tells him that her aunt (who is also
her landlady) has a large stash of money hidden
away. They decide to kill her, and also kill a
Greek boxer who owes Frank money, making it look
like a murder/suicide. When Frank's wife returns
to him, eager to begin their marriage again, he
kills her out of sheer frustration. Later, he
is blackmailed by Staplin (Bernard Blier), his

Robert Bresson,

follow Joan as she is imprisoned, interrogated,
tried and finally executed. Once the final shocking
act is realized, it’s hard to deny the overwhelming
power of Bresson’s subtle cinematic sword.
Also featured on this DVD is Dziga Vertov’s
Kino Pravda, a half hour collection of newsreel
shorts filmed in 1922 Russia.

E.T AKA BADI
Turkey 1993
A Turkish remake of the classic American family
film ET, only this one is better. The
alien, this time known as "Badi" looks
like it was found in dumpster and then stuffed
with a clumsy midget! Watch for the roller coaster
scene, it's a real knee slapper! Any fan of the
always amazing Turkish style cinema should not
miss this masterpiece.

EXORCIST
Turkey 1982
Another prime
example of the rip-off potential in Turkish cinema,
this time a scene for scene remake of the American
horror classic The Exorcist that’s
better then the original. Gone is the preachy
pro-religious subtext of the original, now we
get only the goods; with an onslaught of more
pissing, gore, puking and nudity. What more do
you want in a remake? Turkish w/ No Subtitles

STAR TREK
Turkey 1973
Part
of a comedy series called “Turist Omer”
about a goofy guy in a poor excuse for a cowboy
hat who always winds up in bizarre situations.
This time around, Omer gets mistakenly beamed
aboard the Starship Enterprise where he’s
dropped right into the middle of a Turkish rip-off
of “Star Trek” episode “The
Man Trap.” You get Turkish replications
of all of your favorite Star Trek characters,
including Mr. Spock (who is known as Mr. Spak
in this one), Captain Kirk, Ohura and enough
bad space monsters and fake rocks to tide over
even the most fickle Dr. Who fan! Like “Turkish
Star Wars,” this film shamelessly swipes
footage from the original.

riding mutant savages! It's up to the pilots to
save these people from the mutants! Combining
life size evil muppets with a Flash Gordon
like bad guy and stealing not only footage and

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
Turkey 1975
It seems as
though the Turkish have ripped off ever single
famous American film, but this one has to be the
most bizarre one yet! A scene for scene remake
of the classic Mel Brooks’ comedy Young
Frankenstein, made one year after the release
of the original. Complete with Igor, Frau Blücher,
Inga and the saddest Frankenstein’s monster
you will EVER see! Taking familiar scenes from
the original, like the out of control bookshelf
joke, or a dead guy’s hand as your hand
joke, or the abnormal brain joke, the movie feels
incredibly weird. There is something very strange
about watching these familiar jokes done in an
entirely new and foreign fashion. For fans of
the one of kind genre of Turkish rip off cinema,
this is an absolute must see.

ULTRA
GIANT AND JUMBO A
Thailand 1974
This
is the first of the two co-productions that Sompote
Sands’ Chaiyo Productions participated in
with Japan’s Tsubaraya Productions, the
second being the infamous Hanuman and the 7 Ultramen.
Like Hanuman, Giant and Jumbo A features characters
from one of Tsubaraya’s numerous live action
giant super hero series, though in this case not
one as time-tested or enduring as Ultraman. In
fact, Jumborg Ace was already off the air in Japan
by the time of Giant and Jumbo A’s release
in 1974, and does not appear to be all that well
remembered today.
Watch it as weirdly enduring phony Ultra Man fun.
Plus the special effects are on par with most
Japanese sci-fi of the time.

VERUSCHKA
Italy 1971
Written by
fashion model and Blow Up star Veruschka
von Lehndorff, this film is a shockingly surreal
and downtrodden journey through the rural countryside
of Italy. We follow Veruschka on a downward spiral
of self-discovery that leads her through many
whacked out head trips. Verushka mixes
a heavy, dark and sad narrative with some of the
most stunning psychedelic eye candy you can find
from the freak out era of 70's filmmaking! Includes
one of Ennio Morricone's best scores! Veruschka
is a true one of kind experience. Highly recommended!

WHAT
A WHOPPER!
U.K. 1961
Starring one
of the most famous faces in the UK, Sid James,
this goofy comedy concerns a writer whose book
on the Loch Ness Monster will not sell. He tries
every publisher he can find and they all turn
him down. In an act of desperation, he gathers
up some of his bohemian friends, creates a fake
monster, photographs it and starts a giant stir
with the Scottish locals. As you can imagine,
hilarity and high jinks ensue.
Fans of early British rock n roll farce films
will love it!

WHITE
POP JESUS
Italy 1980
Get ready for
one whacked out weirdo religious movie! White
Pop Jesus tells the story of a modern day, disco
garbed Italian Jesus and his tireless quest to
rid the streets of Italy of drugs and organized
crime, seemingly through the art of snazzy dressing
and bad musical numbers. That’s right, White
Pop Jesus is a musical, filled to the brim with
strange and thrown together dance routines.
Needless to say, this film is incredibly rare
with little to no literature about it out there.
Of course that makes the viewing experience all
the more entertaining! Watch it without a vested
opinion or expectation and you are bound to at
least enjoy the brain frying sequence where white
Italian Disco Jesus defeats the slutty syringe
via strangulation but not before performing a
truly stupid dance routine with her!
Recommended weirdness!
This disc also includes the 1966 mod rock movie
Crazy Baby!

YANCO
Mexico 1961
Yanco is a
haunting, hallucinatory and touching film made
in Mexico in 1961. It tells the story of a small
boy who finds the daily noise of his town painful;
the chickens, the church bells, the blacksmith’s
banging, so he escapes it by stealing a row boat
and floating to a near by island where he plays
music on his homemade violin. His playing attracts
the attention of a hermit who lives on the island.
The man introduces the boy to an instrument called
Yanco and teaches him to play it. When the man
dies, the boy begins sneaking out at night to
play Yanco, the sounds scare the townspeople who
think the music is coming from an evil spirit
in the woods. Eventually the townspeople kill
the boy when they discover he is the source of
this strange music.

YPOTRON
Italy 1966
One could argue
that Ypotron's hero, secret agent Lemmy Logan,
is nothing more than a cheap Italian knock off
James Bond, and you'd be right. But that doesn't
mean Ypotron doesn't have a charm and
psychedelic sophistication all it's own. The now
forgotten British beat band The Sorrows
do the amazing theme song and Nico Fidenco (Black
Emanuelle) produced one of his finest film
scores. Secret Agent Logan has access to much
cooler secret agent gadgets than Bond ever did;
like cigarette lighter communicators, instant
oil slick capsules to derail people chasing you,
a briefcase movie camera which not only develops
the film automatically but will also project it
onto a tiny screen, a receiver in a Norelco shaver,
a nifty gadget that makes phones ring, and a radar
tracking device in a Bible! Lemmy Logan's mission
is to stop the deployment of a deadly space weapon”
called Ypotron before it is too late!
